Meta is introducing new restrictions for users under 18 in participating US states and territories to reduce excessive social-media use and distractions.
Two-hour daily limit
Teenagers will have a combined two-hour daily limit across Instagram and Facebook. Time spent on one platform will count towards the same allowance on the other.
Once the limit is reached, access will be blocked unless a parent disables the restriction. Meta says it will also account for multiple accounts where it can detect them.
Non-personalised feeds
Teenagers will be able to make a non-personalised feed their default, rather than relying on Meta's recommendation algorithms. Parents will also have the option to require this setting.
Autoplay can also be turned off, meaning users will have to deliberately tap or swipe to view the next piece of content.
Overnight curfew
Meta is introducing a new “Night Mode”, blocking users under 18 from Instagram and Facebook between midnight and 6 a.m.
During these hours, teenagers will not be able to view or post on Feed, Stories, Explore or Reels.
Notifications muted during school
Between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m., push notifications will be muted by default. Direct messages and essential safety or security alerts will still come through.
Meta says the restrictions are designed to curb prolonged use, reduce distractions and give parents greater control over teenagers' social-media habits.
